Make Wise Choices and Take Responsibility

Written by: Amanda Levison, M.S., LMHC, LPC, CCBT

We can think that our situations are a result of bad luck, others appearing to always getting

their way, that we never win, our lives are not what we expected, and so on. But do you ever look at the role that you play in your own life? We are ultimately responsible for our own choices, consequences, happiness, and our lives in total. We are almost always in control of what is going on, and when things are not going the way we would like, or we make choices that are not the best, we need to look at our role in situations. Taking responsibility for your decisions and their consequences is how we learn to make proper adjustments to our lives. If you don’t like the outcomes, choose differently. If you are miserable, make changes. If you messed up and made a wrong choice, did something wrong or made a mistake, own that error and do what needs to be done to address making it right. Make amends to those you wronged. Say sorry, say please, say thank you. Be the one to do right. When we look at our part and our role in our own lives and do not shift responsibility and blame others for our needs, wants, messes, and ultimate happiness, we can come to realize that we are the ones that provide the answers and the solutions for our own lives. The gift is when we address those areas, we being to have extended gratitude for the bigger picture... your own life.
