Standard Massages
We offer three types of standard massage in Harrisburg PA, hot stone massage, Swedish massage, and acupressure massage.
Hot Stone Massage
A hot stone massage is a form of therapeutic massage where an experienced massage therapist places heated stones on your body. The stones are typically made of a volcanic rock called basalt and heated to between 130 and 145 degrees. The heat from the stones relieves pain and muscle tension, improves immunity and sleep, and reduces stress and anxiety.
Swedish Massage
Swedish massage is ideal for people who want to improve their health and energize their bodies. Your Swedish massage therapist will use lotion or oil and a variety of techniques, including kneading, vibration, and percussion, to release tension. A Swedish full-body massage can reduce chronic pain and aid with depression and anxiety.
Acupressure Massage
Acupressure massage has its roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It uses pressure on selected points on the body to release chi, or life force energy. The pressure is applied by the massage therapist’s fingertips. Acupressure massage may be used to relieve pain and headaches, improve circulation, release muscle tension, or as a way to maintain good health.
Specialty Massages
In addition to our three traditional massage services, we offer six specialty massage treatments to improve mental and physical health.
Prenatal Massage
Prenatal massage is useful in all stages of pregnancy from the first trimester through the third. Pregnancy discomfort can be debilitating for some, and a prenatal massage can relieve pain and discomfort, nausea, and other symptoms of pregnancy. Our licensed prenatal massage therapists use techniques from Swedish massage with modifications to ensure the comfort and safety of mother and child.
Decompression Massage
Decompression massage uses specialized suction cups to encourage lymphatic flow throughout the body. Unlike traditional Chinese cupping, it does not leave red marks on the skin. It is most frequently used as a nonsurgical treatment for neck, back, and radiating limb pain in the low-to-moderate range. Benefits include increased metabolic response and a release of muscle tension.
Sports Massage
Sports massage is a specialized massage designed to help athletes and people with extremely physical lifestyles who may need manipulation of major muscle groups to recover from injuries or enhance their athletic performance. Sports massage may include treatment of tendons, ligaments, joints, and soft tissue and may be used for recovery or maintenance.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage is ideal for treating tight and constricted muscle tissue, particularly the muscles in the neck, shoulders, and lower back. It focuses on realigning the deep layers of muscle and connective tissue, releasing chronic tension with deep finger pressure and slow strokes. It may be useful for treating fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and other chronic conditions, as well as for improving mobility and range of motion.
Cupping Therapy
Cupping therapy is another treatment that comes from Traditional Chinese Medicine. Traditional cups may be made of glass, bamboo, or earthenware. Cupping treatments may be dry or wet. The cups are heated before being applied to the skin, which creates suction. Cupping therapy is often used to treat acne, chronic pain, facial paralysis, and herpes zoster.
Add-On Services and Enhancements
We offer an array of add-on services and enhancements that patients can use to personalize their massage experience.
Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is a holistic and therapeutic practice that has been around for centuries. It uses natural plant extracts to enhance physical and motional well-being. Some aromatherapy oils we use in massage treatments include eucalyptus, lavender, and peppermint.
Hot Stone Massage Mini
Hot stones may be added to any massage treatment as an enhancement. Your massage therapist will use hot stones in conjunction with other massage techniques. Hot stone therapy is ideal if you have problem areas that may not respond to massage alone.
Hot Towel Foot or Hand Treatment
Hot towel foot or hand treatment can be added to a massage for a spa-like experience. Your massage therapist will wrap your hands or feet in hot towels, followed by exfoliation and moisturization. A hot towel treatment is ideal for soothing sore hands and feet and may also benefit people with arthritis.
Targeted Hot Stone
Targeted hot stone therapy is ideal for patients who need special attention for painful or tight muscles. The stones are used as part of a massage, with the heat providing relaxation and helping the massage therapist to eliminate tension in the selected areas.
Integrative Reflexology
Integrative reflexology combines the techniques of reflexology, which involve applying pressure to chosen points on the body, with a traditional massage. Pressure in reflex zones may be used to alleviate tension and pain in other parts of the body and may be helpful to patients with chronic muscle and joint pain.
Massage Therapy in Harrisburg PA FAQ
Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most frequently.
What Should I Expect at a Massage Session?
Before your session begins, your massage therapist will consult with you to learn why you scheduled a massage and what conditions or symptoms you hope to treat. They will use what you tell them to structure your massage for the best possible results. Make sure to tell your therapist if you have any allergies to ingredients that might be in lotion or massage oil and about any medical conditions you may have.
After your consultation, your therapist will leave you alone to remove whatever clothing you wish. Some people prefer to be completely disrobed, while others prefer to leave some clothing on. You will lie underneath the provided sheet until your therapist returns.
Your therapist may play music, but you can let them know if you prefer silence. The therapist will always respect your privacy, uncovering only those body parts that are being massaged. You should tell your therapist about any discomfort you experience so they can modify their treatment.
After the massage, your therapist will leave you alone to get dressed. You may ask any follow-up questions you have and discuss future massage treatments.
Are Your Massage Therapists Licensed and Certified?
All Neurofeedback & Counseling Center of Pennsylvania massage therapists are licensed and professionally certified. They are also insured. You can be confident that whichever therapist you choose is an experienced professional who will respect your privacy and use their training to provide the best massage therapy session possible.
How Often Should I Get a Massage?
Massage frequency can vary from person to person. Some people like to have regular monthly massages for stress reduction. People who experience chronic pain, athletes, and those recovering from an injury may work out a treatment schedule that requires multiple visits. Your massage therapist can recommend a treatment plan and help you decide how often to get a therapeutic massage.
What is Your Massage Cancellation Policy?
Our massage cancellation policy requires a 24-hour notice for cancellation. We have this system in place because our expert massage therapists are in demand, and appointments fill quickly. If you won’t be able to make your appointment, we can use the 24-hour notice to accommodate someone on our waiting list.
There is a $50 cancellation fee if you do not cancel at least 24 hours in advance. We are happy to reschedule your appointment if you need to cancel.
